Planet Police by Natalie Vellacott5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() and less than 1 minute later, I find the entire series in one boxed set I wasn't so clairvoyant as to see it coming, but expected to find it one title at a time.and likely I still will. Oh wow.I'm going to find that whole series here, aren't I? Removed from #124, see above, Farmer Boy: This author does have an actual memoir, but it doesn't, at least in my opinion, hold the charm and interest level that her children's series commands. Natalie Vellacott worked in Sussex Police for almost a decade, during which time she investigated almost every type of crime from traffic offences. When confronted by a journalist about the scene in one of the books in which a family member is chased by ravenous wolves, which of course is not something wolves do to humans, LIW replied with great dignity that she had not intended to write history she intended to write stories for children. ![]() NONE of the "Little House" series is autobiography. Removed for being children's fiction: Little House on the Prairie : Planet Police: Never A Dull Moment Policing The Streets Of Britain (9781910197851) by Vellacott, Natalie and a great selection of similar New, Used and Collectible Books available now at great prices. ![]()

The tale of beren and lúthien5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Edith Bratt was three years older than Tolkien. However, the roots of his own love story go back as far as 1908 when Tolkien was a sixteen-year-old schoolboy. Tolkien’s tale of Beren and Luthien may have begun in 1917. ![]() However, Luthien and Beren’s love story finds other, perhaps unwitting echoes, in Tolkien’s and Edith’s relationship – which saw the couple undergo their trials and tests before they too could have their own happily ever after. “I never called Edith Luthien,” Tolkien wrote to his son Christopher in 1972, a year after Edith’s death, “ but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion.” Tolkien began the tale in 1917, inspired to create Luthien after seeing Edith dancing and singing in a hemlock grove. However, the inspiration for the very first of his tales, Luthien and Beren, lies buried within the grave with him: his wife, Edith Bratt. Inspired by the First World War, the changes of industrialization and its effects on the English countryside and the myths and legends of Faerie and the Anglo Saxons, Tolkien’s most famous Middle Earth sagas are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the Catholic section of Oxfordshire’s Wolvercote graveyard is the last resting place of Oxford Professor of Anglo Saxon and creator of the Tales of Middle Earth, J.R.R. ![]()

Walking with Ramona by Laura O. Foster5/13/2023 ![]() Initially the sky was grey and cloudy overhead, “Ok, this isn’t too bad,” I thought, “If only it wasn’t so damn cold.” I started to walk back to the shore, wondering how I’d finish the walk under these conditions. I stood on the floating dock beneath the bridge, as instructed by Foster, and wondered to myself why I hadn’t made my way out here before, it was a serene moment, realizing that I was the only one standing out there so close to river’s small waves. I was not prepared, only a light sweater to protect myself from Portland’s unusually cold March weather. ![]() It was freezing cold when I walked down to the boat ramp at Cathedral Park, located right along the water of the Willamette river, under St. I decided to try this stair walk tour after a long, stressful day, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable, calming days I’ve had all winter. John’s, one of Portland’s most famous and photographed bridges, and for good reason, it’s one of the most scenic places in all of Portland. ![]() ![]() Foster’s “Portland Stair Walks” begins with a trip to St. ![]()

Twisted games elena lawson5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() I tugged it out with a grunt, and felt the warmth of fresh blood pool and spill down my forearm. Until I could move enough to reach over my battered body to the IV needle I’d haphazardly jabbed into my vein when the fever came on, bringing with it a delirium so complete that I saw four of my own arm as I fed the needle into my skin. Long enough that I could draw a fuller breath and the dim light no longer seared my eyes. I couldn’t be sure how much longer I lay there in a pool of my own sweat and blood and piss and stink, but long enough that the feeling returned to my fingers. I groaned, but that only made my ribs scream in protest of the vibration. The cold room wavered in and out of focus. My neck strained as I turned stiffly on the sweat-soaked pillow beneath my head, trying to blink through the haze clouding my eyes. My sight returned in increments, eyelids heavy and crusted so thickly my eyelashes plucked themselves free of my flesh as I worked to open them. ![]() ![]() My body felt frail, wisp-like as though hollowed out and stuffed with leaves. Knowing there would be nothing to throw up even if I succumbed to the urge. But, unwilling to move just yet, I forced the rank taste of death down as I swallowed, trying to moisten my aching throat. ![]() A foul taste defiled my dry mouth and I resisted the swift and sudden urge to turn over and vomit onto the cement floor. Its angry claws dug into my chest and arms, dragging me up from the depths of a deep and dreamless unconsciousness. ![]()
